Our Standard for Fine Leather

Not all "genuine leather" is created equal. Full-grain leather — the hide's outermost layer, left intact — is the standard we hold every House of Leather piece to. It's denser, more durable, and ages into a richer character over years of use, unlike the sanded, corrected, or bonded leathers that crack and peel long before their time.

The Hallmarks We Hold Ourselves To

Every piece is checked against the same standards before it earns the House of Leather name:

  • Edges hand-finished and burnished, never simply painted over

  • Natural grain left visible, with no artificial embossing to fake a pattern

  • Hardware that moves smoothly and resists tarnishing over time

  • Stitching kept close and consistent, doubled at every stress point

Caring for Your Leather

A little regular care goes a long way. Wipe your piece down with a dry cloth to remove surface dust, then use a leather-specific cleaner with a soft damp cloth before letting it air dry naturally. Every two to three months, condition it — a cream-based conditioner for smooth leathers, an oil-based one for thicker hides — applied sparingly so the leather absorbs it without becoming saturated.

Protecting It From the Everyday

Leather and moisture don't mix well, so keep your piece away from prolonged damp and never dry it with a hairdryer if it gets wet — let it air dry, away from direct heat. Prolonged sun exposure will fade and dry out the hide over time, so store and use your leather away from direct sunlight where you can.

Storing It Properly

When you're not using a piece, stuff it lightly with acid-free tissue to help it hold its shape, and hang garments on wide, padded hangers rather than wire ones that can leave marks. Store everything in a breathable cotton dust bag rather than plastic, which traps moisture, and keep pieces away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. Small scuffs and dry patches can often be worked out with a leather balm; anything deeper is best left to a professional restorer.

A Piece Worth Passing Down

Leather that's chosen well and cared for properly doesn't just last — it improves, taking on a character that's entirely its own. That's the standard behind everything we make. Crafted to Last.
